Euroma2005Invitation

Operations and global competitiveness

The European Union made a large step forward by integrating ten new country members in 2004. There is a lot of discussion all over the world on how this change will affect the European economy. The new members are afraid because of their productivity and competitiveness lag, while old members try to protect their economy from cheap labour and low prices. The rest of the world has a wait-and-see strategy. How will operations take part in this debate? How will the global competitiveness of Europe evolve in the future?

We seek for further questions and answers related to all areas of operations management. We believe that the conference is an excellent opportunity for both academics and practitioners to share ideas, practical experiences and research findings within the wide field of operations management.

Highlights of the programme

  • Leading international keynote speakers, both academics and practitioners
  • Parallel streams for paper presentations
  • Special sessions on focused issues based on the participants’ interests
  • Selected papers published in journal special issues
  • The Chris Voss Best Paper Award
  • Conference dinner and sight seeing
  • Plant tours
  • Partners’ programme

Euroma2005General information

Conference location

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is an economic, financial and cultural centre with two million inhabitants. The city which is beautifully situated on both sides of the Danube river has a history dating back over 2000 years. There are ruins from the time of the Roman Empire as well as from the Middle Ages. Its main characteristics reflect the atmosphere of the end of the 19th century when the millennium of the Hungarian State was celebrated. It boasts a number of museums (picture gallery of the museums), theatres, concert halls, a lot of restaurants and other amenities. Several baths and thermal waters of various medicinal springs are also at the disposal of visitors. In recent years the UNESCO put several parts of the city on the World Heritage list. If you would like more information about Budapest, you may wish to visit some of the links below:

Participants arriving at terminals (Ferihegy 2A or Ferihegy 2B) of Budapest International Airport are advised to use the Airport Minibus shuttle service which takes one to any address in Budapest for a fee of 2100 HUF/person (cca 9 EUR). It takes appr. 30-45 min. from the airport to the city. As an alternative, one can use public bus service (line 93 red) which connects both terminals with the underground (metro) line 3 (blue line). The blue line of the metro has a stop at "Népliget" bus terminal and "Nyugati" railway station. Price approx.: 300 - 500 HUF/person (cc. 2 EUR), depends on number of changes. Taxis to or from the city cost approximately 4000–4500 HUF (16–20 EUR) for a one way trip. Car rentals are available at the airport. Public transportation network. Please be informed that the low cost airlines arrive at terminal 2B as well.

Important note

This years’s phase of the reconstruction project of Metro Line no.2 is scheduled to period between 11 June – 19 August. The reconstruction works cover the central section of the metro line this year, therefore the trains are running on two section between Déli pályaudvar – Deák ferenc tér and Stadionok – Őrs vezér tere. On the section between Deák tér – Stadionok buses replace the metro. Durong the reconstruction period three stations will be rebuilt this summer: Astoria and Keleti pályaudvar stations on the closed section, as well as Batthyány tér station on the section in operation. The metro does not stop at Batthyány tér station.

In the following section (How to get to the University) we are suggesting the most convenient way to reach the Conference site.

We appreciate your understanding and patience.

Passport, Visa, Invitation letters

All foreign visitors must have a valid passport. The visa policy of Hungary is liberal. For visits shorter than a month, no visa is required for citizens of most European countries, the United States, Japan and Israel. Most European citizens can visit Hungary with their domestic identity card. Agreements of the Republic of Hungary on abolition of visa requirements are available on the internet. Visa is required for visitors from most Asian countries, and most states of NIS. Those who experience any trouble in getting visa to Hungary should not hesitate to contact the conference secretariat immediately. Please note that Hungary is a new member state of the EU from the 1 May, 2004. Please make sure to check any changes in your visa regulation at the consulate. The list of Hungarian missions can be found on the Internet on the web site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If you need an invitation letter to obtain visa, please contact the conference secretariat. This, however, cannot be considered as a commitment on behalf of the organisers to provide any financial support.

Foreign Exchange, Banking Facilities

The Hungarian currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). Currency exchange booths are available at the airport terminals, railway stations, travel agencies, banks and various places in the city. Traveller’s cheques and convertible currency may be exchanged at these facilities. Major credit cards are usually accepted in most hotels, restaurants and certain shops in the city. Obtaining cash against ATMor credit cards is very easy from the ATM cash machines that can be found at almost each bank office, hotel or on the street. Euroma20054th EUROMA Doctoral Seminar 2005

Objective
The EurOMA Doctoral Seminar provides PhD students with a forum for presenting and discussing their research and an opportunity to get feedback from and exchange comments and views with fellow Ph.D. students and experienced researchers in the field. The Doctoral Seminar is held once a year, just prior to the EurOMA annual conference.

Structure
The Doctoral Seminar consists of three 'classes' or years.

  • In the first year, participants are invited to present their research design and preliminary results. This class is meant for students who are in the first year or early in the second year of their studies. Participants who complete the seminar are given a certificate titled 'Research Design in Operations Management'.
  • Students who took part in the first class will be invited to join the second class, one year after. In that seminar, the discussion will focus on results and preliminary conclusions (contribution to theory, methodology and/or practice of Operations Management). Upon completion of this seminar, the participants are awarded a certificate titled 'Research Results in Operations Management’.
  • The third phase is a presentation of a full paper at the EurOMA conference.
Students are strongly recommended to attend the EDEN Doctoral Seminar on Research Methodology in Operations Management (see below) before entering the EurOMA series of Doctoral Seminars.

Work mode: presentation, discussion and reflection
First year's participants to the EurOMA Doctoral Seminar must provide a written project description as part of their application for the Doctoral Seminar.

Second year's participants must submit a working paper covering their initial findings and conclusions.

All participants are expected to present, discuss and reflect on their work to and with fellow-students and faculty.

Location and date
The 4th EurOMA Doctoral Seminar will take place at ELTE University Congress Center (UCC), Hungary, on 17-18 June 2005, the Friday and Saturday before the EurOMA conference.

Participation
The maximum number of participants in the first year's group is 25. The second year's seminar is by invitation only.

Fee
The fee for the Doctoral Seminar is € 480 for members of EurOMA and € 580 for non-members if the payment is received till 10th April. After this date the registration fee is € 530 for members of Euroma and € 630 for non-members.
This fee includes:

  • Participation in the Doctoral Seminar, the seminar dinner (Friday evening), and lunches, coffee and refreshments.
  • Participation in the EurOMA conference (19-21 June 2005, at Budapest University of Economics, Hungary), including proceedings, lunches, refreshments and conference dinner.

Application
To apply for participation in the Doctoral Seminar doctoral students must submit a short project description (5 pages) with name, project title, affiliation, and a recommendation from their supervisor. This set of documents must be sent to Professor Harry Boer no later than February 4, 2005 by e-mail at hboer@iprod.auc.dk.

Notification and preparation
Applicants will be notified of acceptance of reject of their proposal by Friday 18 February 2005. Successful applicants will then be asked to prepare and submit no later than Friday 20 May 2005 (i.e. one month before the Doctoral Seminar) a full paper describing their research design (first year's group) or a working paper covering the preliminary results and conclusions of their research (second year's group).

Submission
The first year's participants are expected to submit a paper describing their research design. The second year's participants submit a working paper covering preliminary results and conclusions of their research.
Three 'requirements':

  • Indicative length: 10-15 pages for first year's; 15-30 for second year's.
